Some states have great rest stops for catching a few zzzz’s. I discovered on my December sabbatical trip that NC is not one of them when towing. I was grateful to find a campground just off the highway…but was it worth the cost?
I was developing a slight headache behind my eye, and needed some Excedrin and a nap. I pulled off at a truck stop in Dunn, NC to get a sandwich and rest but it was bustling with activity – inside and out. I wasn’t going to get much rest there. After a satellite map view check of possible rest stops, I deferred to the RVParky app for a campground.
By this time, my eye hurt and I wasn’t feeling to good. The gentleman who answered the phone at RVacation Campground was so helpful to provide me a large pull-in site so I wouldn’t have to unhitch. I was only about 30 minutes away and the campground was parallel to I-95. Exactly what I needed…someplace close with easy access.
Check in was quick and the office had a few basic supplies and convenience items. My assigned site was a share back-to-back water/electric only, though the other half was empty. There was still plenty of room for slides to extend without intruding onto the other site. The passenger side of my site had a grass area, shade tree, patio style table and chairs. I arrived around 2pm and there were several empty sites around. There appeared to be more permanent rigs further back and I felt the friendly bond of community.
The campground itself was quiet; some people had holiday lights on throughout the night. The traffic on I-95 was not buffered by trees though there was a bit of distance. I could hear it while awake though it did not keep me up…very similar road noise at a rest area that is set back from the roadway. The RV spaces began to fill over the course of the evening. Many were stop-overs as myself as they began leaving after 6am the next morning.
On road days, I like to be driving. I stop for 4-6 hours to eat and nap, then get back on the road. I really do enjoy the drive! I prefer rest areas for such stops. Traveling during a holiday week requires flexibility and I was blessed to discover RVacation Campground. I do not often head south on 95, but glad to have such a gem available. If traveling I-95 through NC, I recommend RVacation (NC exit 98) if you need an overnight stop.
